How to Prevent Ant Infestation in Automatic Cat Feeders

One of the biggest frustrations for cat owners during warmer months is finding a trail of ants leading straight to their automatic cat feeder. Once ants find a reliable food source, they keep coming back. Here are practical, safe methods to keep ants out of your cat’s food.

1. Use an Ant-Proof Feeder Mat or Moat

The most effective physical barrier is a water moat. You can purchase specialized anti-ant trays that sit under the feeder. You fill the tray’s outer channel with water, creating a barrier that ants cannot cross. If you want a DIY solution, place the feeder on a shallow baking sheet filled with a tiny amount of water.

2. Apply Diatomaceous Earth (Food Grade)

Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a natural, safe powder that destroys the exoskeleton of insects. Sprinkle a light perimeter of DE around the base of the automatic feeder. Ensure you use the “food grade” version so it is completely safe if your cat accidentally ingests a small amount.

3. Regular Cleaning Around the Feeder

Ants are attracted to crumbs and kibble dust. Automatic feeders sometimes drop a few pieces of kibble that bounce out of the bowl. Sweep or vacuum around the feeding station daily, and wipe down the exterior of the feeder to remove oily food residue that might attract scouts.

4. Opt for Airtight Feeders

Some ants will climb up and enter the food hopper from the top. Choose an automatic feeder with a sealed, twist-lock lid and a silicone sealing ring to prevent pests from accessing the main food supply.
